Councillor Daniel Duggan

Born and raised in Gateshead, Daniel attended Glynwood Primary School and Emmanuel City Technology College before studying at the London School of Economics to read for a BSc in Government. Subsequently, he completed an MA in Political Thought (with Distinction) at Durham University and a Graduate Diploma in Law at Northumbria University. He has taught the history of political thought at Durham University as a Politics Tutor and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Daniel has previously worked in the legal sector and with a strong commitment to social justice was a volunteer for the Gateshead Citizens Advice Bureau, an experience that, along with reading On Liberty by J.S. Mill, encouraged him to embrace liberal politics. With a keen interest in civil liberties, Daniel has also volunteered as an Independent Custody Visitor at Gateshead Police Station and is a member of Liberty.

Passionate about standing up for Low Fell and bringing the community together to create positive change and community spirit, Daniel is an active member and former Vice-Chair of the Low Fell Forum. The Forum is a non-political residents group which fund raises and organises events in Low Fell throughout the year, including, the Low Fell Summer Fayre in Kells Lane park, the Remembrance Day Service, and the Christmas tree and lights 'switch on' event.

Committed to working for a cleaner, greener and fairer Gateshead, Daniel has led many campaigns over the years to improve the environment for residents in Low Fell. These have included improvements to winter gritting, calling for cleaner streets, the restoration of the Boer War Memorial, improvements to road drainage/flood prevention, the installation of extra bus stops, road safety on Chowdene Bank, leading litter picks, and regularly waging war on potholes!

Through his work on co-editing 'Focus on Low Fell', the Low Fell Liberal Democrats' regular resident’s newsletter, the Low Fell Focus Facebook page, and e-Focus, a fortnightly e-mail newsletter about Low Fell news (which you can sign up to here), Daniel works hard to keep Low Fell residents informed all year round.

Daniel has been a Low Fell Councillor since 2016, when he was elected with 52.5% of the vote, is a member of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority, and liaises with local Community Police Officers throughout the year to feedback any concerns raised with him by residents.

Daniel's ward surgery is held between 6-7pm on the third Tuesday of every month (except August) at Kells Lane Primary School and residents are encouraged to come along to raise and discuss any issues that they think he might be able to help with.
