CUT! Council Tax

GATESHEAD NOW HAS THE HIGHEST COUNCIL TAX RATE OF ANY METROPOLITAN COUNCIL IN ENGLAND!

At yesterday’s budget meeting Labour Councillors in Gateshead voted to increase Council Tax by 3.99%.

This is the highest Councils are allowed to increase Council Tax by, without automatically triggering a referendum of local residents for their approval.

Band D homes will now pay £1,823.91 (not including the police and fire precepts). This is the highest Council Tax rate of any Metropolitan Council in England - and over £100 a year more than residents in Newcastle pay.

Gateshead Liberal Democrats believe it's unfair to expect the people of Gateshead to shoulder a maximum increase in Council Tax, when their Council is sitting on reserves of £39 million. Which is £33 million more than the Government recommends.

As the official opposition on Gateshead Council, Gateshead Lib Dem Councillors voted against the Council Tax hike because we demand a fair deal for Gateshead residents.

Councillor Jonathan Wallace, Leader of the Opposition, said “People are really struggling in Gateshead and this maximum Council Tax rise will make things even more difficult for hard working people. The maximum allowable 3.99% increase in Council Tax will raise nearly £3.6 million, when Gateshead Council is already sitting on reserves of £39 million. The Government states that Gateshead Council needs at least £6 million in reserve to be at a prudent level – it has £33 million more than that and it is planning maximum Council Tax increases every year until 2024. We feel this is simply not right and Gateshead Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for a fair deal for the residents of Gateshead.”

During his speech in the chamber, Councillor Wallace called on Labour bosses to stop wasting taxpayer’s money. Recent examples of waste include spending £700,000 on a car park which is now going to be ripped up, blowing £11,000 on trips to the Cannes in the South of France, and spending over £5,000 on communications consultants to design a ‘corporate narrative’ for the Council.

In light of Labour’s decision to increase Council Tax by the maximum allowable rate, Gateshead Lib Dems are now calling for a Council Tax cut to give hard-pressed residents a break.

IF YOU BELIEVE A MAXIMUM 3.99% INCREASE IN COUNCIL TAX IS UNFAIR WHEN THE COUNCIL IS SITTING ON EXCESSIVE RESERVES, PLEASE SIGN BELOW:

We, the undersigned residents, believe it is unfair that Gateshead Council has usable reserves of approximately £33 million, charges the highest Council Tax rates of any Metropolitan Authority and then increases Council Tax by the maximum allowable rate to prevent having a referendum for our approval.

We call upon Gateshead Council to cut Council Tax back to 2019/2020 levels.
